Midtjylland to Merseyside: Future Everton stars?
Following an active summer transfer window, the regeneration project that is in full swing at Everton seeks to continue this January.
After making several ambitious signings through the likes of Thierno Barry, Tyler Dibling and more, the club have made their plans clear by targeting up-and-coming talent across Europe.
One club that has been on the Toffees’ radar is FC Midtjylland of Denmark, who have shone on the domestic and European stage this season. Scouts from Everton have visited the Danish outfit eight times this season, according to Oliver Otte Okstrøm.
With Ulvene currently sitting second in both the Danish Superliga and the Europa League, their array of talent has shone brightly, and here are some of their star men.
Franculino Dju
At 21 years old, Franculino Dju has spearheaded the Midtjylland front line and has been prolific in front of goal.
The Guinea-Bissau international and teammate of Beto has been linked with Everton, as well as other clubs around Europe, making him one of his side's most valuable assets.
His form has been scintillating this season. He has managed 22 goals and assists in 22 matches in all competitions, and with form like his, Dju will have many teams keep close tabs on him. That return includes 16 in just 17 league games.
Thierno Barry and Beto are currently in competition with each other, but have combined for just two Premier League goals this season. Dju would offer an alternative and signing a player of his profile would be an ambitious move from the Toffees. However, any potential move would likely wait until the summer, with the in-demand forward sidelined until March after undergoing minor surgery this week.
Aral Şimşir
Initially starting his career at HB Køge, the Danish-Turkish international has played for Midtjylland from U15 level, and has risen through the ranks since.
He is a technically gifted winger who plays on the left for his team, and while he isn’t particularly gifted with regard to pace, the 23-year-old makes up for this through his close-quarter dribbling, making his play style similar to Jack Grealish.
The winger has been Midtjylland’s chief creator this season and has racked up 14 assists in all competitions. Akin to Grealish, he has drawn the most fouls for his side, with 38.
Should Everton fail to sign their star loanee from Manchester City, Şimşir could prove to be an ideal replacement.
Lee Han-beom
Lee Han-beom has been a regular feature in the Midtjylland defence this season, with his side managing eight clean sheets in all competitions.
The South Korean international made the move to Denmark from FC Seoul in 2023 and has only recently managed to build consistent playing time.
He is known for his confidence on the ball and takes a very modern approach to his role as a centre back, with his passing being a strong point of his game.
Out of all Midtjylland players to have attempted at least 200 passes this season, the 23-year-old has registered the highest pass accuracy in the team, 84%.
As James Tarkowski and Michael Keane start to reach the closing period of their careers, and with Jarrad Branthwaite showing struggles to maintain match fitness, a youthful centre back such as Han-beom could be a crucial addition to this Everton side.

Here's a piss poor rip-off.
Mainoo is unrealistic. Harvey Elliot seems unloved, but is a tidy footballer. I'll complete my RS love-in with ex Harry Wilson with 6 months left on his deal.
I'll get some blues back on side with Richarlison, but Brennan Johnson is a more interesting pick. Pacey and can play across the front 3. Ward-Prowse will be on the move, but is slow as school custard and not what we need.
Antonee Robinson deserves a better club than Fulham, but at 29 next August, I'd be surprised if he is a target for a big fee.
Ben Chilwell is a player I'd expect us to be in for. 12 months left on his deal, failed loan signing in August, Played last 14 games after an injury nightmare. He is a good footballer if you can keep him on the pitch.
At right back, Maitland-Niles will be mentioned, as is the link to Virinho ex Burnley. I'd prefer the latter. We've bodged it together for too long, and need a real right-back to own the shirt for the next 5 years plus.
Up front a Beto vs Artem Dovbyk player swap might suit both clubs. He did little in the friendly in the summer, but neither has Beto since. He, like McNeil and Patterson, might be shown the door.
Elsewhere, we could rescue Victor Boniface from a failed loan spell at Werder Bremen, a recovered Terem Moffi. Forget Ivan Toney, he's making tax-free bunce, and will be in no rush to share it with Keir & Rach.
I don't dislike the links to up-and-coming players in Scandinavia. There will be emerging, hungry talent that are what we should be targeting. Certainly more so than some of those I've mentioned.
Dju has been mentioned for a long time. But is ruled out injured till March, from what I've read.

The club have (over the decades) surprised us all by signing players that have never been thought of because they are so off the radar. Generally average to terrible. The club has never answered to why they are so incompetent.
IMO, the next window will still have to address the dreadful position our squad was left in by the previous DoF. I am not convinced the club are competent enough to sign decent players to fill the glaringly obvious needs we require at right-back, left-back, centre-midfield, and of course a goal scorer!
Our needs are critical, but are hampered by poor personnel whose job it is to recruit quality players. I refer to three goalkeepers, Aznou, Barry, Dibling and the persistently injured Rohl.
Remember, we still have Patterson, who is a right-back but is behind the Toffee Lady for selection. Now Dibling clearly has not been given any decent game time, with Moyes defiantly keeping him benched.
The other issue we have is FFP (in whatever guise it is). I don't see us having enough wiggle room to recruit exactly what is needed.
We cannot afford to waste any more money. Not a penny. We have seen time after time after time the dross that we have massively overpaid for in transfer fees and wages. All that got us is relegation battles and the occasional mid-table mediocrity. Sweetened with miserable cup performances and not even a sniff of the weakest European competition in 8 years. Not that we do anything when we have stumbled into any of the European competitions.
We are seeing some fresh hope in our recent league matches. But with insufficient resilience in a numbers shy squad, a very poor academy (a continual annual achievement) and awful loanee's (until Jack Grealish), Everton's player purchasing system has to do something it has rarely done in Premier League history in January.
